Actually, Mr. Spade is a *co*-founder of SRLP. There were multiple founders, as anyone who was present at the creation can tell you. That has been a slight rewriting of queer history. Was he the predominant fundraiser? Yes. Was he the only founder? No.

Additionally, Mr. Spade no longer is a staff member at SRLP (see http://srlp.org/about/staff/ for the brilliant and awesome people who work there now!) and seems, at least, to devote most of his resources to teaching and research. And, you know, great...we need teaching and research, no doubt. The problem is that the strategic and intentional removal of transmisogyny from his work is Deeply Problematic, and a distinct departure from his earlier work which was more implicitly and explicitly inclusive of trans women, but something has changed as he's migrated to the ivory tower. That said...I am, regardless of who founded it, 100% pro-SRLP. Can't say that enough.

Add in that Mr. Spade seems to have a deep fear of interacting with actual trans women (or so multiple trans women have reported) and you've got a little problem. Sure, he has tokens. But do tokens a commitment make? I think not.

I think trans women are left out of his analysis in his books and academic work, or at least he doesnt mention trans misogyny, which is pretty fucking important when we are talking systemic subjection of trans people. However, Dean also founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and still runs it to this day. So i dont think he has an "ivory tower" mentality, he is quite firmly rooted in 'community' at a grass roots level.
